Roy’s Birthday – 2021

Happy birthday to my baby brother! To celebrate this lauded event, Dad and Janice picked Roy up at his house and met us for lunch at the Country Boy restaurant in Leiper’s Fork. We grabbed a big table and ordered a hearty meal; a cheeseburger and fries for Roy, country fried steak with mashed potatoes for Dad and Terry, a veggie plate for Janice and a fried chicken sandwich with fries for me. Mmm, mmm, mmm.

For his birthday, Dad and Janice gifted Roy a starter set of baking tools which included a rolling pin, bench scraper, silicone pastry mat, nested biscuit cutters and a pastry blender. Technically, this gift was for Roy but its intent was for Roy to use with Lily. She has become a dab hand at baking and cooking so they wanted to nurture this creative outlet and give them an opportunity to create fun memories of being together in the kitchen.

To continue celebrating, we all met up at Kilwin’s old fashioned candy and ice cream parlor in downtown Franklin. Oh boy! Dad and Janice opted for Pistachio ice cream, Terry had his eyes set on a cup of decadent Fudge Brownie ice cream, I chose a cone with creamy, dreamy Sea Salt Caramel while the birthday boy chose one of his favorite treats, Chocolate Covered Strawberries.

Today was Lily and Elijah’s first full day back at school. Since Dad and Janice had hung out for a good part of the afternoon, they decided to hang just a bit longer and pick up the kids with Roy. Lily actually had track practice after school so this would be a solo retrieval. Of course, they were looking for Roy’s truck so it had to have absolutely blown their minds to see him get out of Big Daddy and Gigi’s car in the pick-up line.

Later that evening, on the precipice of a window rattling thunderstorm, I went to Roy’s and hung out while he opened the gift from his big sis, The Art of the Album Cover. We both love music, vinyl records, art and history and this book explores seven decades of iconic album covers and the photographers, designers and artists who created them. This book just ticked all the boxes.  And who doesn’t love a good coffee table book?

To complete the thematic ensemble, the package topper was a deck of music themed playing cards with illustrations of artists from the worlds of pop, rock, folk and country, soul, blues and R&B.

Happy birthday Roy!!!
