Peter Max

This afternoon, Roy asked if I would like to join him in viewing the exhibit of pop culture icon, Peter Max at Music City Fine Art in downtown Nashville. I happily agreed. This exhibit was a curated retrospective of Max’s forty year career as well as a platform to display a new collection of paintings that represented Nashville’s musical heritage.

The bonus was that Peter Max was making a special appearance this weekend as well. In anticipation of his attendance, we decided that we would bring along our very own copy of the “Peter Max Poster Book”. This oversize book, full of hippy, trippy pictures with bold, wonky shapes and colors really captured the eye and imagination of a small child, that would be me, and was around the house as long as I can remember.

Once we arrived, we discovered that you could receive an autograph from Max if you made a $50 donation to his charity, cash only. Roy and I were both cashless. So off we go in search of the elusive ATM. It’s Sunday afternoon so downtown Nashville is a ghost town. The sidewalks have been rolled up and the streets are deserted. It made us both feel a little hinky to say the least. Using an App on Roy’s phone, we finally found an ATM inside an office building several blocks away, made our withdrawal and headed back to the gallery.

You could also have your picture taken with Max if you purchased one of his paintings. The minimum starting price was $3,000. Needless to say, we did not have our photo taken with him.
