Mother’s Day – 2012

To celebrate Mother’s Day this year, we decided we would gather at the Farm and have a “Picnic on the Porch”.  This actually worked out perfectly because it rained steadily all day.  Terry and I loaded up the picnic baskets and headed to Gallatin arriving around 11:30am and unloaded in the pouring rain.  Minutes later, Norma arrived with Levi in tow.  Levi spent the night with Norma Friday and Saturday so that Jill could recuperate.  Norma took Levi shopping and he was so excited to give Jill her Mother’s Day presents.

After Jill opened all her gifts from Levi, I took the fresh corn I had taken off the cob this morning, mixed it with heavy cream, butter and salt and pepper and popped it into the oven that Dad had preheated along with the biscuits and the fried chicken just to warm it up a bit.  While that was all going on we set the table in the newly furnished sunroom and set out the drinks and desserts.  Chris was having breakfast in Nashville at the Pancake Pantry so he came by later but Bill came over from next door and joined us for lunch.

The Menu:
Fried chicken
Egg salad sandwiches
Corn casserole
Greek pasta salad
Buttermilk biscuits
Homemade strawberry freezer jam
Sliced tomatoes
Green olives and sweet gherkins
Celery stalks with Ranch dressing
Chocolate pie
Chocolate cupcakes
Fresh squeezed lemonade with mint
Tangerine Italian Soda
Fresh baked rosemary and dill bread that Dad had baked and was amazing with the egg salad that Janice had prepared

After lunch Janice opened her cards from Roy, Leah, Lily and Elijah which were so sweet and other gifts.  A few weeks earlier when Janice received her Sgt.Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band vinyl album, she commented on how much she missed having a record player.  So taking that to heart we ordered her a portable, vintage inspired, Crosley record player.  One thing led to another, until she unearthed all her albums, 45’s and 8 tracks that had beens stored for a couple of decades in the basement and the attic.  It was a real kick in the pants to see the album covers and to take turns playing our favorite tunes on the turntable.  So we spent the afternoon in the sunroom, looking through a few old Life magazines (one being the landing on the moon from 1969) and listening to music that tugged at our heart strings evoking laughter, nostalgia and memories of a simpler time.

And kudos to Jill who was a real trooper.  She had her surgery on Friday and was in pain but she hung in there the whole day.
