How is it even remotely possible that we have a bona fide teenager in our midst? Yes, Lily officially turned 13 today. Boy, did those thirteen years go by fast. To celebrate, a backyard movie party was planned and friends from school invited.
The movie chosen for the birthday extravaganza was one of my favorites, the 1990 cult classic, “Tremors” starring Kevin Bacon. Roy had the brilliant idea to hire an outdoor movie rental company to come out and handle all the tech logistics. The movie system they set-up included a huge, inflatable screen, high definition projection, DVD/Blu-Ray player, and an intense sound system.
In addition to the movie, the celebration featured lots of pizzas and garlic bread from Roma’s, bags of popcorn served from a carnival style popcorn machine, icy bottled Cokes, lots of potato chips and Chips Ahoy cookies.
There were a few flies in the ointment which were all handled stealthily behind the scenes. One was that just as it was getting dark enough to start the movie, it began to sprinkle. Not only rain, but wind. Well crud. Outdoor movie plus rain, plus wind, plus inflatables is not a great combination. Sound the alarm! With great speed, the adults jumped into gear and began grabbing food, blankets, drinks and relocated them to the bonus room for an alternative movie viewing space.
Wait…what? The rain stopped? Reverse course! Pop-up tents were set-up just in case and then blankets were spread out for relaxing. Once everyone was settled and the movie started, Roy and I scooped out home churned strawberry ice cream to those who had a hankering.
As the evening wore on, the temperature plummeted and we found ourselves grabbing jackets, scarves and more blankets. Crazy weather for the end of May.
Lily had a super, fun evening with her friends and a memorable 13th backyard birthday extravaganza.
