Grandmother’s – February 2022

Terry and I pointed the car towards Elizabethton this morning and hit the road. We haven’t seen Grandmother Ginny and Phyllis since Andi’s wedding last October so I was tremendously excited. As always, we had a marvelous time. We arrived late afternoon and is our per usual, ate our way through Elizabethton. We feasted on Italian at Black Olive Thursday evening after which we sat around the kitchen table talked and laughed while digging into a chocolate pie brought over by Grandmother’s good friend, Carolyn Carter. Carolyn has worked at Milligan since the 1980’s in IT and helped purchase and install a new computer and printer this week for Grandmother. Terry has been working with Carolyn via phone and text so she knew we were coming for a visit this weekend and left us a special treat.

We savored Korean for lunch Friday at Red Chili (Terry’s favorite) in the old Bonnie Kate Theater with leftovers and ham sandwiches that evening. Saturday, a curbside order of French onion soup with an Asian side salad from Applebee’s was the star of the show for lunch for Grandmother, Phyllis and me while Terry enjoyed a riblet basket and fries. Saturday night we dug into loaded baked potatoes with icy, cold  Cokes which satisfied all our cravings.

Since relaxation was our priority for the weekend, we managed to binge watch quite a lot of movie as well. Stretched out on Grandmother’s bed, we watched two Agatha Christie movies starting with the “Crooked House” with Glenn Close on Netflix Friday night and a three episode production of the “ABC Murders” on Amazon with John Malkovich as the indubitable Hercule Poirot Saturday afternoon. That evening, we  watched a documentary on Lucy and Desi Arnaz and with “Just one more thing…”, to round our perfect weekend, an episode of one of my favorite TV detectives, Columbo.

Dinner together at the Black Olive Thursday night.

Lovely spring blooms waiting for us in our bedroom.

Grandmother and I found some wonderful photos in her chinoiserie secretary desk in the living room:
Top Left: Grandmother Ginny and Granddaddy Roy
Far Right: B.R. Taylor sitting next to Carrie Fielder Taylor
Bottom Left: I recognize B.R. in the the center but I’m not sure about the ladies.

Another treasured find was this sweet thank you note to Grandmother Ginny from Becky.

When I shared the letter with Roy he sent me a photo of the book he found online and said,

“…it was my favorite book. I got it at a book fair my kindergarten year at the old Howard school.”

One last photo before we head home.
