Our plans for the Fourth changed dramatically. Initially, we were going to host and celebrate the Fourth at our house, go swimming at the pool, grill out and then drive over to Harlinsdale Farm that evening to watch the fireworks. Well, Mother Nature pulled a fast one on us. The recent heat wave has been brutal and has caused severely dry conditions across the state. In fact, many fireworks displays were cancelled because of the potential for fire. The Franklin show wasn’t cancelled but we all agreed no one wanted to grill out lunch in one hundred degree heat nor sit in a dry, dusty field in insufferable heat at nine o’clock at night.
So Plan B was instituted. Dad and Janice invited us to the Farm for an inside celebration. We enjoyed sandwiches for lunch in the cool, air conditioned sunroom, played spoons (quickly learned why you don’t play “forks”), the boys shot their guns while for dinner Chris grilled Chipotle beer chicken and corn on the cob which we had along with potato salad, deviled eggs, homegrown tomatoes and ice cold Cokes. The cherry on top was Jill’s Star Spangled Banner cake with coffee which we all devoured.
As the day turned to evening, a quiet rain began and as we watched the fireworks displays on TV, we played spoons and Gin Rummy on the sunporch.
