First Day of School – 2020

Has 2020 been a crazy year or what? Here we are in August and the world still remains a distinctly weird place. COVID-19 struck hard in March and literally shut the entire world down. With physical schools closing, parents, students and teachers had to hit the ground running to try to figure out new and inventive ways to continue the educational process while remaining safe. With that in mind, we all learned a new vocabulary word and a new way of going to work, visiting family and going to school virtually, Zoom.

Levi, Elijah and Lily did a great job finishing out the school year, each excelling and adapting remarkably well to all the upheaval and changes. Everyone thought by the time school rolled around again that everything would be back to normal. It is decidedly still far from normal. The federal and local government are at odds as are parents and teachers. Everyone has a different perspective on how to keep their kids and families safe and it is really causing a kerfuffle all around.

How can Levi be in the 5th grade?

Levi started his first day of school at the beginning of August and I’m sure he was happy to if not be back in school, to at least to see all his buddies. Hopefully, we’ll be seeing Levi on the tennis court this school year as well as he made the Friendship Christian tennis team.

Go Wildcats!

And how about this guy? Elijah Laws is the big man on campus as he starts the 4th grade. A perk of being an “upper classman” is that you get paired with a kindergartener as a big buddy. This is truly a badge of honor and it is the cutest thing to see the itty bitty’s with their big buddy.

As I’m writing this, I was just informed by Roy that to avoid overcrowding and to aid in socially distancing protocols during the lunch period, kids will receive a menu at the beginning of each week and their lunches will be delivered to their desks. I gotta ask, will they deliver to my desk?

This will be Elijah’s last year at the BGA Lower School. Next year, he’ll join Lily at the upper school. I know she can’t wait for that.

Lily's ready to take the 7th grade by storm.

As a 7th grader, Lily moves from the Gold Hall of the BGA Campus reserved for 5th and 6th graders to the Blue Hall for 7th and 8th graders. In addition to moving to a different part of the campus, Lily will be able to choose a foreign language this year, either French, Latin or Spanish, as well as choose two elective classes. I can’t wait to see what she decides to pick. Also, if we’re lucky, we’ll be able to see her sprint past us in a gazelle-like fashion as she joins the cross country team.
