Elijah’s 9th Birthday – 2020

Roy threw a spontaneous, we’re in the middle of a quarantine, birthday party for Elijah this afternoon. The day was perfect to meet all outdoor, social distancing norms. A folding table was set up under his mighty oak tree in the front yard and draped with a summery, red and white checked table cloth. This morning, Roy picked up a giant, super-sized, mylar, number nine balloon and then a dozen assorted Krispy Kreme doughnuts comprised of glazed, chocolate glazed and an Oreo cookie doughnut, filled with Oreo cookie cream filling, dipped in chocolate icing and topped with crushed Oreo cookies.

The kiddos were pretty surprised by this impromptu celebration. Instead of blowing out candles on a cake, not a good idea during a pandemic, Roy placed a candle in a single doughnut, Elijah made his birthday wish and then we all dove into the Krispy Kreme box to snag our favorite. Elijah was keen on the chocolate glazed while Lily’s favorite was the Oreo inspired doughnut.

Elijah couldn’t wait to dig into his presents, cards, cards with moolah, clothing and games. Roy supplied him with cool clothes from NorthFace which will come in handy for their hiking and camping trips, while Terry and I gave him a game called Rock Me Archimedes, a balance game with marbles using strategies similar to chess and Chinese checkers.

The icing on the cake,  so to speak was the 2 liter bottle of Diet Coke Roy picked up so Elijah could try the Mentos challenge and watch the sticky cola spew and erupt like a volcano.

This was a birthday he will surely never forget.
